Getting it running, start to finish.
Six steps from a fresh install to a safe your phone and your computer both open.
Setting up
From a fresh install to two devices.
- 1
Start a vault
On the first device, choose Start a new vault and set a master password. Nobody can reset it, so pick one you will keep.
- 2
Show a pairing code
Go to Devices → Add a device. It shows a QR code and a pairing link. Use the next address switches between this device's network addresses: Wi-Fi or Ethernet first, then a Tailscale 100.x address.
- 3
Join from the second device
Choose Pair with my other device. A phone scans the code with its camera; a computer pastes or types the link.
- 4
Joining a phone's vault from a computer
A computer cannot scan, so it pairs the other way round: its Pair with my other device shows a code, and on the phone Devices → Add a device → Scan the other device's code reads it. The phone then sends the pairing link straight back, sealed with a one-time key taken from that code, and the computer is waiting for it on port 27931 beside the sync port.
- 5
Unlock
Open the app on the second device with the same master password. The entries arrive at the next sync.
- 6
Remove a device
Devices → Paired → tap a device → Remove. It goes into the vault's own list of removed devices, so every other device honours it after its next unlocked sync. The removed device keeps whatever copy of the vault it already had, which is why a master password you still trust matters.
Worth knowing
Things it does that you might miss.
A few of the parts people find after a week, which are worth finding on day one.
- Change the master password anywhere
- Change it on whichever device is to hand. Your other devices carry on reading their entries and take the new password the next time they catch up.
- Remove a device once, anywhere
- Take a device off the list from any of the others, and every remaining one agrees.
- Light and dark
- It follows what you already prefer, and you can set it either way.
- Search as you type
- Your logins filter down as you type, so the one you want is a few letters away.
